The second matchday of the 2026/27 English Premier League season has delivered an early dose of drama, with several big clubs facing difficult tests as the new campaign gathers momentum.

Sunday's action produced three headline results. Brighton & Hove Albion made a major statement with a 4-0 demolition of Aston Villa, while Manchester City staged a late comeback to defeat Bournemouth 2-1. Newcastle United and Liverpool then shared the points in a thrilling 2-2 draw at St James' Park.

Manchester City looked set for disappointment after Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead. Marc Guéhi equalised late before Joško Gvardiol struck in stoppage time to complete a dramatic comeback for Enzo Maresca's side.

Liverpool were also forced to fight until the final moments. Newcastle twice took the lead, but Dominik Szoboszlai converted a 99th-minute penalty to rescue a point for the visitors.

Brighton, meanwhile, produced arguably the biggest statement of the day. Their 4-0 victory over Aston Villa, featuring four first-half goals, put them firmly among the early pace-setters and left Villa with serious questions after a difficult opening weekend.

The opening round had already produced major surprises, including Hull City's 2-0 victory over Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur's 3-0 defeat at Brentford.

With the season only beginning, the early results underline how unpredictable the 2026/27 Premier League campaign could be. The leading contenders still have plenty of time to settle, but the opening fixtures have already shown that no points will come easily.
