Manchester United suffered a disappointing start to their 2026/27 Premier League campaign after falling to a shock 2–0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

United entered the match with renewed optimism after finishing third last season and securing Champions League football. However, that confidence quickly disappeared as Hull produced a disciplined and energetic performance on their return to the Premier League after a nine-year absence.

Hull took control in the first half and opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Defender Semi Ajayi reacted quickest after a set-piece situation to put the hosts ahead, exposing United's defensive weakness from dead-ball situations.

The Tigers then doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Nobel Mendy headed home from another set piece. United's defence again struggled to deal with the delivery, leaving Hull in a commanding position before the break.

United had plenty of possession but struggled to turn it into clear scoring opportunities. The visitors controlled around 72 percent of the ball, yet Hull remained the more dangerous and organised side. Bryan Mbeumo came closest to getting United back into the match when his effort in the 78th minute was saved by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Michael Carrick attempted to change the game with his substitutions, including bringing Marcus Rashford into the action after half-time. But United could not find the breakthrough they needed, with Hull's defence holding firm until the final whistle.

The defeat represents an early reality check for Carrick, who had guided United to an impressive finish last season and earned a permanent managerial position. The result also highlights concerns over United's defensive organisation and their ability to break down determined opposition.

For Hull, however, it was a historic afternoon. The newly promoted side celebrated a 2–0 victory over one of England's biggest clubs and secured their first league win against Manchester United in 52 years.

Carrick admitted the defeat was painful but insisted United must learn from the setback. With the season only beginning, Manchester United now face the task of responding quickly and proving that the defeat was a setback rather than a sign of deeper problems.

For the travelling United supporters, the final whistle brought frustration and disappointment. For Hull City, it marked the perfect return to the Premier League — a famous victory that immediately announced that the newly promoted Tigers intend to compete rather than simply make up the numbers.
