WFTU European Office Condoles Nepal Flood Victims

The organisation expressed sympathy to families who have lost loved ones and to communities whose homes, livelihoods and towns have been devastated by the floods, reaffirming its support for workers and vulnerable communities affected by the disaster.

In its statement, the WFTU European Regional Office linked the increasing occurrence of extreme weather events around the world to environmental destruction and what it described as economic choices driven by capitalism and the pursuit of profit. “Once again, it is the people who are paying the price for the choices of capitalism,” the organisation said, arguing that environmental degradation has altered seasonal cycles and contributed to increasingly severe weather events. The trade union body further argued that floods, landslides and droughts cannot be viewed solely as isolated natural occurrences, maintaining that they are also connected to what it described as “predatory choices” made by capital, multinational corporations and what it called the imperialist bourgeoisie.

The organisation said the consequences of such disasters are felt most severely by working-class communities and the poorest sections of society, who often have limited resources to protect their homes, recover their livelihoods or rebuild after major disasters. The WFTU European Regional Office reaffirmed that European workers and trade union organisations affiliated with the World Federation of Trade Unions stand in solidarity with the people affected by the floods in Nepal.

“European workers, and the trade union organisations affiliated to the World Federation of Trade Unions, always stand shoulder to shoulder with the people affected by these tragic events,” the statement said. The message placed the Nepal floods within a wider global concern over climate change, environmental destruction and the growing impact of extreme weather events on vulnerable populations.
