The Trade Unions International of Public and Allied Employees (TUI PS&A) is set to convene an international virtual symposium on October 20, 2026, bringing together trade unionists, workers’ representatives and labour movement allies to discuss the changing characteristics and challenges of the working class in the modern era.

The symposium, scheduled to begin at 15:00 Johannesburg time, will focus on the theme “The Characteristics of the Working Class in Our Era.” The discussions are expected to provide an opportunity to reflect on the evolving world of work and the issues affecting workers across different sectors and countries.

Cde Zola Saphetha, General Secretary, will deliver the keynote address at the virtual gathering.

Workers’ Rights and the Changing World of Work The symposium comes at a time when workers and their representative organisations continue to navigate changing economic conditions, employment relationships and workplace demands.

For trade unions, understanding the contemporary working class is important in shaping effective strategies for collective bargaining, decent work, employment security and the protection of workers’ rights.

Issues such as fair wages, safe working environments, social protection, job security and access to collective representation remain central to labour movements worldwide. Workers are also experiencing changes associated with technological advancement, new forms of employment and evolving labour market arrangements.

These developments make dialogue among trade unionists and workers’ representatives important in identifying common challenges and strengthening cooperation across national borders.

Trade Union Solidarity Across Borders

The international symposium is expected to bring a global labour perspective to discussions about the position of workers in today's economic and social environment.

Trade unions play an important role in representing workers' interests, negotiating employment conditions and advocating policies that promote fairness and dignity in the workplace.

International engagement also provides opportunities for labour organisations to exchange experiences, discuss shared concerns and consider how collective action can respond to emerging challenges.

For public and allied employees in particular, discussions about the characteristics of the working class can help inform broader conversations about public services, employment conditions and the welfare of workers who contribute to essential services.

The meeting also offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of unity among workers, regardless of their country, occupation or employment status.

The meeting will be held through Zoom on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, beginning at 15:00 Johannesburg time.
