Reykjavík, Iceland: France has formally assumed command of Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) from the United Kingdom, marking a new phase in the Alliance’s ongoing maritime security operations.

The command handover took place in Reykjavík, Iceland, with the UK-led Battle Staff, commanded by Royal Navy Commodore Maryla Ingham, transferring responsibility to a French-led staff under Rear Admiral Nicolas Molitor. According to NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM), the UK-led Battle Staff operated as a multinational team, bringing together personnel from Belgium, Germany, Poland, Portugal and Spain.

During its deployment, the group operated across the Atlantic area, from the Baltic Sea and Arctic to the High North and the eastern seaboard of the United States. It participated in major NATO activities and exercises, including Baltic Sentry, Arctic Sentry, Dynamic Mongoose, FLEETEX250 and the International Naval Review 250.

The task group also conducted maritime manoeuvres, boarding operations, gunnery exercises, anti-submarine warfare, critical infrastructure protection, casualty evacuation drills and other activities designed to strengthen Allied readiness and interoperability.

A notable achievement for the Royal Navy was the Battle Staff's deployment aboard two Allied vessels. It initially operated from the German frigate FGS Sachsen before transferring to the Canadian warship HMCS Ville de Quebec—the first time a Royal Navy-led task group had commanded operations from ships belonging to two different Allied nations.

“Leading Standing NATO Maritime Group One has been a great privilege,” Commodore Ingham said, praising the multinational Battle Staff and Allied ships that served alongside the UK. She said the deployment demonstrated that NATO’s maritime strength comes from “unity, trust and professionalism” among its members.

The Royal Navy also contributed a Wildcat HMA2 helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron while aboard FGS Sachsen. The aircraft supported surveillance, reconnaissance and force-protection missions.

The task group received visits from senior NATO and Allied naval commanders, including Commander Task Force Baltic Rear Admiral Stephan Haisch, Royal Navy Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Sir Steve Moorhouse and Commander Joint Force Command Norfolk US Navy Vice Admiral Douglas Perry. SNMG1 is one of NATO’s four Standing Naval Forces. It is maintained at high readiness to provide maritime security, support freedom of navigation and respond rapidly to emerging threats across the Alliance. The command has now passed to France as NATO continues to strengthen its maritime presence and cooperation among Allied navies.
