Members of the Bugweri District Roads Committee have raised concern over the deteriorating state of roads in the district following an inspection exercise conducted on October 31, 2026, across Igombe, Buyanga and Makuutu Sub-counties to assess road conditions and identify areas requiring urgent intervention.
The inspection, involving district leaders and members of the Roads Committee, aimed at establishing the challenges affecting road infrastructure, improving accessibility and pushing for better road maintenance to support transportation and economic activities.
During the exercise, the committee observed varying road conditions, with some roads in good shape, others fairly maintained, while several were found to be in poor and deteriorating states.
Among the major challenges identified were inadequate road construction and maintenance equipment, failure to install culverts on some constructed roads and irresponsible parking of heavy trucks used by sugarcane plantation workers.
The committee noted that trucks parked along roadsides obstruct transportation and interfere with the smooth movement of other road users. Speaking to journalists, Bugweri County MP, Hon. Hajji Wandera Sadala, said the inspection was important in enabling leaders to physically assess the situation on the ground, identify existing challenges and advocate for appropriate government interventions.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Bugweri District Roads Committee and Woman MP, Hon. Stella Nankwanga Maris, cautioned sugarcane and sand loaders against activities that contribute to the destruction of public roads.
She urged transport operators to exercise responsibility and avoid practices that damage road infrastructure. She also reassured residents that government plans were underway to provide the district with the necessary road equipment to strengthen maintenance.
The district Vice Chairperson, Mrs. Namaganda Betty, assured residents that more roads would be rehabilitated to improve accessibility and ease the movement of people and goods across the district.
She said district leadership remained committed to addressing road challenges and appealed to community members to report damaged roads and avoid activities that undermine maintenance efforts.
The leaders also emphasised the need to prioritise roads connecting major trading centres, agricultural production areas and communities, noting that reliable roads enable farmers to transport produce to markets without unnecessary delays and additional costs.
They expressed optimism that addressing the identified challenges would improve road safety, strengthen service delivery and stimulate economic development across Bugweri District.
They urged responsible authorities to translate the concerns raised during the inspection into timely and practical action.
