Arsenal Stunned by Brighton: What Went Wrong for the Champions?

Although Arsenal enjoyed 60% possession, Brighton created the more threatening moments and finished with 17 attempts compared with Arsenal's 11. Brighton also registered five shots on target, while Arsenal managed only two.

The defensive performance was another concern. Arsenal had not conceded three goals in a Premier League match since 2023, but Brighton exposed gaps between the defensive and midfield lines and repeatedly found opportunities from outside the penalty area.

Brighton's intensity makes the difference Brighton deserve significant credit for the result. Rather than sitting back against the champions, Fabian Hürzeler's side pressed aggressively and attacked whenever opportunities appeared.

The victory was particularly significant because Brighton were celebrating their 125th anniversary. Their performance also continued a notable recent pattern of the club defeating reigning Premier League champions at home.

A warning rather than a season-defining result For Arsenal, the defeat provides Mikel Arteta and his players with an opportunity to assess what went wrong before the Premier League campaign resumes after the international break. The result does not erase Arsenal's strong opening run, but it highlights areas that will require attention—particularly defending against aggressive pressing, protecting the space around the penalty area and responding when opponents disrupt their normal build-up play. Arsenal remain near the top of the table despite the defeat, while Brighton's victory moved them into the leading group after five matches.
