PRISTINA, Kosovo, 14 October 2026 — Major General Roberto Vergori of Italy has assumed command of the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR), succeeding Major General Özkan Ulutaş of Türkiye during a change of command ceremony at KFOR Headquarters in Pristina.

The ceremony was presided over by Admiral George M. Wikoff, Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples, and attended by representatives of Kosovo’s institutions and the international community.

Admiral Wikoff commended Major General Ulutaş for his leadership during two tours as KFOR Commander, highlighting his engagement with communities across Kosovo and efforts to strengthen cooperation with the Kosovo Police and the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX).

“He did so with initiative, adaptability, and selfless commitment to the mission and to those under his charge,” Admiral Wikoff said.

He also recognised the sacrifices of KFOR personnel and their families, expressing confidence in Major General Vergori’s leadership and reaffirming the support of Allied Joint Force Command Naples.

“Roberto, thank you for accepting this responsibility,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure, Major General Ulutaş reaffirmed KFOR’s commitment to lasting security and freedom of movement for all communities in Kosovo under its United Nations mandate.

He added that the mission had continued to support the European Union-facilitated dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, which seeks to address outstanding issues between Kosovo and Serbia.

Major General Vergori said KFOR personnel remained committed to fulfilling their UN mandate and helping establish conditions for lasting peace, democracy and prosperity.

He emphasised the importance of creating an environment where future generations could enjoy the benefits of stability and development.

The leadership transition comes as NATO continues to optimise KFOR’s operational posture in response to Kosovo’s security environment. In June, the Alliance announced plans for gradual and calibrated adjustments to the mission’s posture and force strength over the following year.

The process remains conditions-based and reversible should security developments require further changes.

NATO regards the Western Balkans as a region of strategic importance and maintains its commitment to regional stability.

KFOR operates under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999, contributing to a safe and secure environment for all communities in Kosovo and safeguarding freedom of movement.

The mission works impartially and coordinates closely with the Kosovo Police and EULEX, within their respective responsibilities.

As Major General Vergori takes command, KFOR continues its mission to support lasting security in Kosovo and contribute to stability across the Western Balkans.
