ROME, ITALY — The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has expressed solidarity with dockworkers and port workers preparing for an international day of action against war and militarisation scheduled for 30 October 2026.
Cinzia Della Porta, representing the WFTU Secretariat, conveyed the federation’s support during a press conference held in Rome on 15 October to launch the initiative, which calls on workers worldwide to oppose the use of ports and transport networks in military operations.
Representing a federation that brings together trade unions with more than 105 million workers globally, Della Porta described the planned action as an important demonstration of international solidarity and collective resistance to militarisation.
She said the initiative comes amid rising military expenditure, the expansion of war-related economies and growing concerns about fascism, racism and xenophobia. She also highlighted the humanitarian consequences of conflicts, including the situation facing Palestinians and the economic challenges confronting Cuba.
According to Della Porta, resources directed towards military spending often come at the expense of public services and workers’ welfare, including education, healthcare, wages, pensions and social benefits.
She called on trade unions and workers to strengthen international cooperation and oppose military interventions, emphasising the importance of respecting national sovereignty, independence and the right of peoples to determine their own political and economic futures.
The WFTU also reiterated its opposition to economic blockades and sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and their allies on various countries, arguing that such measures affect ordinary citizens and their livelihoods.
The federation further called for the dissolution of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and other military coalitions, alongside the complete abolition of nuclear weapons. It urged governments to avoid participation in military missions and called for stronger labour movements advocating disengagement from military alliances.
On Palestine, the WFTU condemned the killing and displacement of civilians, describing the situation as genocide, and called for an end to occupation and settlement activities in occupied Arab territories. It also denounced US policies towards Cuba, including the longstanding economic, commercial and financial embargo.
The federation praised dockworkers and port workers who refuse to handle weapons and military equipment destined for active conflict zones, describing such actions as expressions of working-class solidarity.
The 30 October initiative is intended to strengthen international cooperation among trade unions and encourage workers to challenge the involvement of their countries in wars.
The WFTU has called on workers and trade unions worldwide to support the action and participate in initiatives promoting peace, disarmament and international solidarity.
