NATO Approves €33.5 Billion Funding Plans to Boost Defence and Support Ukraine

BRUSSELS – In late July, the North Atlantic Council approved NATO's 2027–2031 Common Funding Resource Plan, outlining how the Alliance will invest in shared priorities over the next five years. The plan provides Allies with a forward-looking assessment of NATO's expected resource needs, ensuring common funding keeps pace with the Alliance's growing ambitions amid an increasingly complex security environment. As part of the decision, Allies agreed to the 2027 funding ceilings for NATO's Military Budget, Civil Budget, and Security Investment Programme, raising total common funding to as much as EUR 6.5 billion. The Council also approved the EUR 27 billion NATO Fuel Supply Chain Capability Programme Plan, a major investment to modernize the Alliance's fuel storage and distribution infrastructure. The initiative includes new facilities and pipelines across NATO's eastern and southeastern regions to ensure reliable energy supplies for military readiness and operations. NATO said its common funding supports the capabilities and infrastructure that help protect nearly one billion citizens. It strengthens deterrence and defence, supports military operations and readiness, enhances command and control systems, and provides resources for assistance to Ukraine through the NATO Security Assistance and Training to Ukraine initiative and the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre.
