Yumbe Cocoa Farmers Receive Modern Farm Tools from Turkey's TIKA

YUMBE, Uganda - Cocoa farmers in Yumbe District have received a significant consignment of assorted farm tools from the Government of Turkey, in a major boost for the agricultural sector in the West Nile region aimed at enhancing productivity and transforming rural livelihoods.

The donation was delivered through the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), under the stewardship of the agency's country coordinator, Mr Murat.

The handover ceremony drew local leaders, diplomatic representatives and hundreds of enthusiastic farmers. Community representatives described it as a landmark event reflecting "the spirit of partnership, friendship, and a shared commitment towards improving livelihoods through agriculture".

Gratitude from the farming community

Speaking on behalf of the local farming community, Mr Tabu Sam, chairman of the Yumbe cocoa farmers, expressed profound gratitude to the Turkish government and TIKA for recognising the agricultural potential of Yumbe. The newly acquired tools are expected to immediately upgrade farming activities, boost crop yields and secure the economic well-being of hundreds of households.

"Your presence here today demonstrates confidence in the potential of our people and the future of agriculture in our district. We are truly grateful for this gesture of solidarity and cooperation," Tabu said during the event.

MP Avako Naima credited for the partnership

The partnership was largely credited to the relentless lobbying efforts of the Yumbe District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Avako Naima Gule Musa.

Speakers at the event praised Hon. Avako for her steadfast commitment to bridging the gap between grassroots communities and international development partners such as TIKA. Local stakeholders noted that her leadership style, which prioritises community empowerment and inclusive progress, has been instrumental in bringing practical, life-changing initiatives directly to the local population.

A vision of Yumbe as a cocoa hub

Yumbe District is naturally endowed with fertile soils and a highly industrious population, making it prime territory for lucrative cash crops. Farmers used the occasion to pitch their grand vision: transforming Yumbe into a nationally and internationally recognised centre for cocoa production and agricultural excellence.

Local leaders emphasised that with the right technical support, strategic investments and knowledge sharing, the cocoa sector could become the district's primary driver of mass youth employment, increased household incomes and sustainable rural development.

To sustain the momentum, the community invited TIKA and other development partners to explore further collaborations, including setting up agricultural demonstration projects and driving value-addition investments in the region.

Challenges still to overcome

Despite the optimism and the newly acquired equipment, Tabu reminded stakeholders that the journey to full agricultural transformation still faces critical bottlenecks. He appealed for future interventions to address pressing challenges, including irrigation support to combat prolonged dry seasons, access to improved cocoa seedlings and robust nursery development.

He also highlighted the need for continuous farmer training in modern agronomic practices, post-harvest management, modern storage facilities, value-addition processing equipment and affordable agricultural financing for farmers' cooperative groups.

In a passionate plea to the beneficiaries, he urged the farmers to maintain strict discipline and use the donated tools productively to raise both the quality and quantity of Yumbe's cocoa output.

The event concluded with a resounding vote of thanks to Mr Murat and Hon. Avako Naima, with many voicing optimism that the bond between the people of Yumbe and the Republic of Turkey will continue to grow from strength to strength for generations to come.
