UPDF in Gaza: Why Uganda Is Stepping Onto the Global Stage

KAMPALA-UGANDA: For years, Uganda's military engagements have been concentrated within Africa, from the battle against Al-Shabaab in Somalia to peace enforcement missions in South Sudan and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. These operations have helped establish the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) as one of the continent's most experienced militaries in peace support operations.

Now, with Parliament approving a proposed UPDF deployment to a multinational stabilisation mission in Gaza, Uganda is preparing to take on what could become one of its most significant international assignments.

The move is about far more than deploying troops. It reflects Uganda's growing confidence in its military capabilities, its expanding diplomatic reach and its desire to contribute to international peace and security beyond Africa.
