NATO Jets Down Drone After It Breaches Romanian Airspace in Security Alert
Romanian and Italian fighter jets operating under NATO command intercepted and destroyed an unidentified drone after it crossed into Romanian airspace, in a rapid response operation highlighting the alliance’s air defence readiness.

RAMSTEIN, Germany — NATO fighter jets intercepted and destroyed an unidentified drone after it entered Romanian airspace, in a rapid response operation that demonstrated the alliance’s ability to respond to potential aerial threats.
According to NATO, the incident occurred in the morning hours of 24 July 2026, when two Romanian F-16 fighter jets from Fetești Air Base and two Italian Eurofighter jets operating from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base were scrambled under NATO command and control.
The fighter jets were deployed after an unknown unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was detected flying close to Romanian airspace. NATO said the drone was quickly identified and monitored before allied aircraft were authorised to engage after it crossed into Romanian territory. The threat was then shot down while inside Romanian airspace.
NATO said the operation reflected the alliance’s readiness to respond to emerging air threats at any time. “This multinational combined effort underlines how NATO is ready and able to react to any potential air threats, 24/7, to safeguard our territory and protect our people,” NATO said.
The alliance added that the operation involved close coordination between Romanian and Italian forces under NATO’s command structure, demonstrating the importance of multinational cooperation in protecting allied airspace.
The incident comes as NATO and its member states continue investing in advanced air defence and counter-drone systems amid growing concerns over the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in modern conflicts. Romania has acquired the MEROPS counter-drone system, a capability designed to detect, track and intercept small unmanned aerial systems.
NATO said an investigation into the drone’s origin and the circumstances surrounding the airspace violation is ongoing, while the alliance remains in close contact with Romanian authorities.
