ACCRA-GHANA: The Migrant Labour General Workers’ Union International (MLGWUI) has appealed to organisations, institutions and individuals for financial support to help rescue and assist migrant workers facing difficult circumstances.
In a letter addressed to potential partners and donors, the union said it is seeking urgent support for its labour migrant victims’ rescue mission, including assistance for workers stranded abroad and those facing exploitation and other challenges.
The appeal was signed by the union’s Secretary-General, Justice Kaakyir Baako NTARMAH, who called for support to strengthen efforts to protect migrant workers in distress.
“The support will enable us to respond to migrant workers in distress through rescue and repatriation, legal assistance, medical support, food, accommodation, transportation and other essential interventions,” Justice Kaakyir Baako NTARMAH said.
The union said financial assistance would also support programmes aimed at helping vulnerable migrant workers through skills training, awareness programmes and initiatives designed to protect their rights and improve their welfare.
Justice Kaakyir Baako NTARMAH said partnerships and financial contributions would strengthen the union’s capacity to respond to emergencies involving migrant workers and help promote safe and dignified migration.
MLGWUI said it has been working to promote the rights and welfare of migrant workers and is seeking partnerships with organisations, institutions and individuals willing to support its rescue and humanitarian activities.
The union is based in Ghana and works with migrant associations on issues affecting migrant workers, including rescue, education, organisation and repatriation.
The appeal comes amid continuing concerns over the vulnerability of migrant workers, particularly those facing exploitation, trafficking, unsafe working conditions or difficulties accessing assistance while abroad.
