HOIMA, UGANDA — The Government will advance UGX 175 billion to Abubaker Technical Services to accelerate the completion of the Hoima–Busunju Road, a key infrastructure project supporting Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Minister of Works and Transport Fred Byamukama announced the planned funding during an inspection of the ongoing works on the 145-kilometre road project, valued at UGX 309 billion. The road is strategically important for improving connectivity to Uganda’s oil-producing region and facilitating the movement of football teams, officials, visitors and goods during AFCON 2027.
Construction is approximately 40 per cent complete, with completion targeted for February 2027. The planned government advance of UGX 175 billion is intended to address cash-flow challenges and accelerate construction to ensure the road is ready ahead of the continental tournament.
Of the UGX 175 billion, UGX 65 billion will be allocated to the construction of Kafu Bridge across the River Kafu to help address flooding challenges and improve transport reliability along the route. During the inspection, Byamukama emphasised the need for the contractor to meet its contractual obligations and accelerate construction to ensure the project is delivered on time. The completed road is expected to improve regional connectivity, facilitate trade and strengthen access to the oil-producing region beyond AFCON 2027. The Minister also met local leaders and residents affected by the Kinogozi–Buhimba Road and Mparo Bypass projects to discuss land acquisition and issues affecting project-affected persons (PAPs). He clarified that developments within established road reserves would not attract compensation, while eligible project-affected persons would be compensated in accordance with applicable procedures.
The Ministry of Works and Transport continues to engage contractors, local leaders and affected communities to resolve outstanding challenges and support the timely delivery of critical road infrastructure ahead of AFCON 2027. Editorial note: The story is grammatically sound after these corrections. However, before publication, verify the proposed UGX 175 billion advance, the allocation for Kafu Bridge, the contractor’s official name and the February 2027 completion deadline with the relevant authorities.
