Police in the Busoga East Region have intensified security inspections across the region ahead of the festive season, deploying an inspection team to assess officers’ preparedness, improve service delivery and strengthen crime prevention.
The exercise, led by the Deputy Regional Police Commander (RPC), covers all districts in the region, including Iganga, Bugweri, Namutumba and Mayuge. It focuses on officers’ alertness, case management, hygiene, logistical supplies and general policing standards to ensure communities remain safe before, during and after the holidays.
The Regional Police Commander initiated the exercise to strengthen accountability and ensure officers are adequately prepared for the anticipated increase in criminal activity during the festive period. According to security analysts, the period from October to early January often brings increased movement of people, higher cash circulation in markets, extended business hours and increased alcohol consumption, creating conditions that criminals may exploit.
Police records in Busoga East indicate that theft, burglary, domestic violence, fraud, traffic accidents and counterfeit currency cases tend to increase during this period. Criminals may target crowded markets and homes left unattended when families travel upcountry for celebrations.
The ongoing inspections are intended to identify security gaps early and ensure police officers can respond effectively to emerging threats. Inspections Target Police Readiness Sources within the region indicate that the inspection team has already visited Iganga Central Police Station and stations in Bugweri, Namutumba and Mayuge.
The team checks duty rosters, occurrence books, exhibit stores, armoury management and the condition of detention facilities, including cells and toilets. Officers found absent without official leave or wearing unkempt uniforms are being cautioned, while well-performing units are being commended.
The exercise also emphasises proper case management, hygienic detention facilities and accurate documentation of exhibits, which are essential for professional policing and public confidence in the justice system. The Deputy RPC has directed District Police Commanders (DPCs) to strengthen night patrols, increase deployments at crime hotspots, markets and taxi parks, and ensure officers respond promptly to distress calls.
Traffic officers have also been tasked with conducting road safety sensitisation for boda-boda riders and taxi drivers, particularly as speeding and drink-driving increase the risk of crashes during the holidays.
Communities Urged to Join Crime Prevention Efforts
Beyond inspecting police stations, the operation places community sensitisation at the centre of festive-season security preparations. Boda-boda riders are being encouraged to prioritise personal safety, verify passengers where appropriate, avoid dangerous night trips to isolated areas and report suspicious movements to police.
The business community has also been advised to avoid keeping large sums of cash in shops, practise safe mobile money transactions, install security lights and basic CCTV systems where possible, and employ trusted workers during the busy trading period.
Police commanders across the districts have responded positively, with sensitisation meetings taking place at police stations, trading centres and boda-boda stages. The meetings promote neighbourhood watch initiatives, timely reporting of suspicious activities and cooperation between police and residents.
Local leaders in Iganga Municipality have welcomed the initiative, saying stronger security measures could deter criminals targeting traders during busy market days. Boda-boda chairpersons have also pledged to share information with police and promote discipline at their stages. Child Protection and Business Safety According to Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Kasadha Michael, the inspection exercise will continue until all stations in the region have been covered.
He said special attention would be given to protecting children during school holidays, when some may be left without adequate supervision or exposed to child labour, defilement and trafficking. Kasadha urged parents and guardians to monitor children's movements and report suspected abuse to the Child and Family Protection Unit at their nearest police station.
He also emphasised that security is important for local economic activity, as traders and customers need a safe environment to conduct business. Police are working with municipal councils to regulate trading spaces, reduce congestion and keep emergency access routes open in markets in case of fire outbreaks.
The spokesperson commended Busoga Tribune and other local media houses for supporting community sensitisation, noting that accurate information can help counter misinformation that may trigger panic or mob justice.
Public Cooperation Vital
Police have urged the public to report emergencies through their local DPCs, the Regional Police Commander or the regional hotline, 0741891838. Residents can also use the police app or visit their nearest station to report security concerns. Members of the public are encouraged to save relevant police contacts and remain vigilant, while police have pledged to treat information received with confidentiality.
As the festive season approaches, police are calling on residents to secure their homes, avoid reckless drinking and driving, protect children and report suspicious activities promptly.
A peaceful festive season will depend not only on police patrols and inspections but also on the willingness of communities to work together. Through cooperation, vigilance and responsible behaviour, Busoga East can reduce crime risks and create a safer environment for families, traders and visitors throughout the holiday period.
