SFC Honours 67 UPDF Officers and Men Ahead of Retirement

KAMPALA, Uganda — The Special Forces Command (SFC) has honoured 67 officers and men of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for their dedicated and selfless service as they prepare to retire from active military duty.

The retirees were recognised on Friday, August 7, 2026, following distinguished careers in the UPDF, where they served in military operations, VVIP protection, peace support missions and other strategic assignments.

The group comprised four Captains, 17 Lieutenants, 23 Warrant Officers, nine Staff Sergeants, 12 Sergeants and two Corporals. Other senior officers who attended the ceremony will receive their retirement certificates during the official UPDF retirement ceremony scheduled for August 12, 2026, at the UPDF Joint Headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.

Reading the retirement citations, the Director of Human Resource Management at SFC, Col. Night Ikiriza, commended the retirees for their courage, discipline, loyalty and commitment to defending Uganda throughout their careers. She also acknowledged the contribution of spouses and families, saying their sacrifices and unwavering support had played an important role in enabling the soldiers to successfully serve the country.

Representing the Commander-SFC, the Chief of Staff-SFC, Brig. Gen. John Mango Baraza, congratulated the retirees for their contribution to Uganda's national security. “Many of you have endured challenges in the course of duty, including long periods away from your families, working in risky environments and accepting sacrifices without hesitation,” Brig. Gen. Baraza said. He urged the retirees to approach civilian life with optimism and use the skills and experience gained during their military careers to contribute productively to society. Baraza further encouraged them to maintain the discipline, integrity, patriotism and resilience cultivated during their years of military service.

He assured the retirees that the UPDF remains committed to the welfare of veterans through the Directorate of Veteran Affairs. Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Capt. Boaz Barigye Kazinduki, the senior-most among the junior officers, thanked the UPDF and SFC leadership for the guidance, opportunities and supportive environment that enabled them to serve in different capacities. He also paid tribute to the retirees' families for their continued support and sacrifices throughout their military careers.

The ceremony was attended by brigade commanders, directors, senior and junior officers, non-commissioned officers, spouses and relatives of the retirees. The recognition marked a significant milestone for the 67 service members as they transition from active military service to civilian life after years of service to Uganda.
