NATO Appoints New Commander to Lead Ukraine Security Assistance Mission

NATO has appointed Lieutenant General Guillaume N. Beaurpere as the new commander of the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), as the alliance seeks to strengthen coordination and increase European leadership in supporting Ukraine.

The appointment was announced in Wiesbaden, Germany, during a handover ceremony led by NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Alexus G. Grynkewich, on Monday, August 3, 2026.

Lieutenant General Beaurpere takes over responsibility for coordinating NATO’s efforts to train Ukrainian forces, organise security assistance and improve the delivery of military support from allied nations.

The NSATU mission was established to bring greater structure and coordination to NATO’s support for Ukraine, ensuring that military assistance from different allies is delivered effectively and meets Ukraine’s battlefield needs.

NATO officials said the transition reflects the alliance’s commitment to a more coordinated and sustainable approach, while placing greater responsibility on European allies in managing security assistance. Beaurpere, a French Army officer, brings extensive experience in military operations, leadership and international cooperation. His appointment comes as NATO continues to adapt its support mechanisms amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. The alliance has repeatedly stated that supporting Ukraine remains a long-term commitment, with training, equipment and strategic coordination forming key pillars of its assistance. The new commander is expected to work closely with NATO members, partner countries and Ukrainian authorities to maintain the flow of security assistance and strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities.
